Paul Zschiedrich Homestead

est. 1908

Paul and his wife and their three children immigrated from Germany in 1903. They spent some time in Providence Road Island while Paul’s two other brothers and friends made plans to come west and north to Cariboo. By now Paul had another son and they all arrived in Kersley in the fall old 1908. They spent that winter in a small log cabin, still standing today and with kind neighbours sharing food, they survived the first winter. A single story log house was constructed for the first year, complete with a sod roof that leaked that following spring so two more stories were added.( still standing today). The family grew by one more son. Paul’s brother started a farm on the south end of Dragon Lake. Paul ran a truck farm, turnips was one crop, mixed animals ran undivided in the barn yard. Paul’s son, Edward, took over the farm and his brother, William, had an adjoining 80 acres to the origin 160 and they both farmed both pieces together. 3 acres of potatoes, eventually getting seed potatoe status, bailed cow and horse hay along with some beef cattle. They hosted sever Field Days sponsored by Farmers Institute/ Gov. The farm was sold in 1983 and the majority of it is still under cultivation
